 SUNWHEELS.COM PORTUGAL - ALBUFEIRA CITY
The picturesque town of Albufeira, with its old town clinging to the clifftop, is undeniably the tourist capital of the Algarve, attracting droves of holidaymakers to its golden beaches in the summer. Fishermen in Albufeira still unload their boats and mend their nets at the Praia dos Barcos, but for the most part tourism has overtaken the town's former role as a fishing harbour. Albufeira has been altered by tourism, which leaves it too full in July and August and nearly empty the rest of the year, however Albufeira is still well worth visiting.
Albufeira was once a peaceful fishing village, it keeps its narrow streets in the old town and whitewashed houses perched over a charming beach.
In Albufeira there are lots of Shops, bars and restaurants which fill every corner, but also in Albufeira there is the old castle and the buildings which still preserve Moorish arches and interesting churches, like the one of São Sebastião.
A more picturesque drive is leaving Albufeira and visiting the village of Alte, perched on a hill. Albufeira is famed for its beaches, for the countless shades and tones of its rocks and cliffs. Albufeira beaches have fine sand and the sea is lovely turquoise blue with is sheltered by cliffs. Albufeira is a great holiday destinations, sunbathing during the day and at sunset flocking to enjoy the restaurants, bars and discos that enliven the night-time hours. The long strip of sand with the city of Albufeira surrounding it like an amphitheatre, is made up of three beaches: Peneco, Pescadores and Inatel.
